Denise Perrault’s article in today’s Providence Business News includes Malcolm Grear Designers as proof that design can indeed thrive in Rhode Island. As Grear points out, “People have no idea how much business designers bring to this part of the country”.

Words From the Walk: Joyce Peseroff

June 13, 2008

Hear poet and Pushcart Prize-winner, Joyce Peseroff, read from her latest book Eastern Mountain Time, Thursday, June 19, at 6:30 pm. Peseroff’s poem Summer Communion: Harborside (shown above) is currently on view on the HarborWalk at the Institute of Contemporary Art/Boston (ICA).

The reading is part of the ICA’s “Poems for the HarborWalk” program, a collaboration between the ICA and the Creative Writing Program at UMass Boston.

Malcolm Grear Designers created the ICA HarborWalk Interpretive Panel to display the poems. The angled glass panel protrudes over the water’s edge and creates a gathering place for the program’s readings and performances. This panel is just one part of Malcolm Grear Designers’ design for the ICA’s sign system.

June 11, 2008

Graphic Design: The New Basics is a must read for those wishing to educate themselves in the arena of visual design. Published by Princeton Architectural Press and co-authored by Ellen Lupton and Jennifer Cole Phillips, the book presents a rich and thorough examination of graphic design, “for people who want to understand graphic design in a critical, rigorous way, informed by contemporary media, theory, and software systems.”

Jennifer Cole Phillips includes a dedication to Malcolm Grear, her lifelong mentor and friend. Among the diverse span of work featured in the book are several projects by Malcolm Grear Designers, including the visual identity for Vanderbilt University (shown above).

Oskar Eustis and the Public Theater

June 10, 2008

We recommend reading Campbell Robinson’s recent New York Times article on Oskar Eustis, Artistic Director at the Public Theater.

Click to read the New York Times article.

Malcolm Grear Designers worked closely with Oskar during his tenure at the Trinity Repertory Company in Providence, RI. Under his leadership, we designed an award-winning branding program for TrinityRep, which included a highly successful donor recognition system. We miss Oskar’s passion and vision, and we wish him the best!

Building a Better Brown

June 9, 2008

Check out Michael Skocpol’s recent article in the Brown Daily Herald, which provides an in-depth look at Brown University President, Ruth Simmons’ bold vision for bringing sweeping improvements to the University’s campus, facilities, and programs.

Click to read the Brown Daily Herald article.

You will see photos that accompany the article showing the Building Brown construction fence-wraps, maps, and wayfinding sign system, all developed by Malcolm Grear Designers. This effort helps Brown to beautify the areas under construction and to guide students, faculty, visitors, and the local residents through the campus.

Anish Kapoor at the ICA

May 30, 2008

Don’t miss the Anish Kapoor: Past, Present, Future exhibition at the Institute of Contemporary Art/Boston which opened today and will run through September 7, 2008.

Read Roberta Smith’s review in the New York Times, and be sure to see the Slide Show.

Both Anish Kapoor and the ICA were referenced several times during today’s Radio Boston program on WBUR each for their leadership roles in successful public art. Also mentioned were artists, Mags Harries and Lajos Héder, for their continued contributions to the greater Boston area’s public art.

Malcolm Grear Designers designed (and continues to design) the signs and donor recognition for the ICA. MGD also designed the visual identity and Web site for the Foster Gallery which last year hosted an exhibition of Mags Harries and Lajos Héder.

Malcolm Grear Receives RISD’s Professor Emeritus Medallion

May 30, 2008

Yesterday, the Rhode Island School of Design awarded 50 retired professors the first ever Professor Emeriti Medallion. Malcolm Grear, who taught at RISD for over 35 years, was honored along with other distinguished professors including Lorraine Howes, Richard Merkin, Jack Pripp, Dean Richardson, Friedrich St. Florian, and Marc Harrison (posthumously). The term “retired professor” is not an entirely accurate description of Malcolm Grear, who regularly invites classes to his design studio (Malcolm Grear Designers), occasionally teaches graduate courses at RISD, and maintains a busy national/international lecture schedule.

RISD President, Roger Mandle, who is leaving this leading art and design institution after 15 celebrated years, also received an honorary Emeritus Medallion.

Colby College Museum of Art Launches New Website

May 5, 2008

The Colby College Museum of Art launched their new Web site today. The site, designed by Malcolm Grear Designers, showcases the Museum’s extensive collection as well as their impressive exhibitions schedule, and education and public programing. The design allows visitors large, up-close views of the collection, with the ability to adjust the background color behind any given artwork or object.

Click here to see the new Colby Museum Web site.

The Colby Museum’s new Web site represents a critical step in the roll-out of the Museum’s new brand (also developed by Malcolm Grear Designers). The logotype, color combinations, and typography all work together to communicate the Museum’s new visual attitude. MGD has also developed the new Museum visitor guide and signs.
