The Claiborne Pell Award for Excellence in the Arts

This prestigious award, named in honor of Senator Claiborne Pell, recognizes those who have made distinctive contributions to their artistic fields. Previous Pell Award recipients for lifetime achievement include: Jane Alexander, Ossie Davis and Ruby Dee, Arthur Miller, Toni Morrisson, Robert Redford, Chita Rivera, Jason Robards, Maurice Sendak, Beverly Sills, and Steven Sondheim. The form is comprised of two parts that are alike in shape and size. One piece is carved and polished in granite; the other is cast in glass.
