Janet Alling’s “Flora” To Be Exhibited at the Newport Art Museum

June 14, 2010

Malcolm Grear Designers recently designed the book titled “Flora: Paintings by Janet Alling”. The book is an exquisite collection of watercolor and oil paintings that focus on Alling’s main interest of flowers, plants, and the natural world. Working from direct observation of plants in natural light, Alling’s paintings radiate with hue and vibrancy. Alling, a native of New York City, now lives and paints in Providence, Rhode Island.

Alex Katz, an American artist associated with the Pop art movement, describes Alling’s flowers as “…pure New England.  They are civilized and isolated.  They are decorous, contained, and make no overture to fashion.  The mystery of meaning reminds me of Emily Dickinson. The paintings are straight forward and impenetrable.”

The book, published by Beaufort Books, is a prelude to Alling’s retrospective exhibition  at the Newport Art Museum from June 19 to August 18. For more information about the exhibition, please visit the Newport Art Museum’s online or visit Janet Alling’s website, also designed by Malcolm Grear Designers.
