The Colby College Museum of Art launched its much anticipated searchable online database. This new capability is integrated into the web site allowing visitors to search and view over 6000 objects from the Museum's permanent collection. The site now provides multiple viewing options through an intuitive and easy to use interface. Each object can be examined in great detail using the new "Enlarge/Zoom" tools which also allow users to view full-screen versions of objects.
Altogether, the web site provides an "open door" to access its collection. Students, alumni, scholars, educators, and the general public can easily explore the depth of the Colby Museum's collections. The site also connects the Museum's popular public and educational programs to its diverse collection and changing exhibitions.
While designing the interface for the Searchable Online Collection, Malcolm Grear Designers suggested and developed the customized zooming and full-screen capabilities, believing that users would value such unprecedented views of the works of art. "You can zoom way in, at full-screen, on a Whistler etching and really appreciate the finest details: the impression, the ink, even the grain of the paper!" said Joel Grear, Executive Vice President (MGD). "This design really changes your expectations for a museum web site," explained Tim Tait, one of the designers involved in the project, "because it inspires you to really take your time exploring the art."
Malcolm Grear Designers previously developed the Museum's brand and web site, as well as the Museum Guide, brochures, signs and banners. Most recently we completed the design of the Museum's 50th Anniversary visual identity.
