The Block Island Conservancy (BIC) recently established their first office and educational center in a restored historic building on island. BIC commissioned Malcolm Grear Designers to design an exhibition that would educate the public about the island's conservation efforts. Incorporating images of the island in all seasons, twelve full-color exhibition panels educate visitors about conservation areas and ways in which the public can help.
The Block Island Conservancy is the island's oldest environmental protection group. For over forty years, the group has been working with property owners to conserve and protect habitats for all birds and animals. Currently more than 40% of the island is preserved allowing for public access to hiking trails, scenic views, and for protection of the island's only aquifer.
The Education Center will be formally opened in a ceremony on Wednesday August 14 from 4 to 6pm at the Atlantic Inn. Buses will transport visitors from the inn to the center for tours.
