Today, the Albert and Mary Lasker Foundation announced the recipients of the 2013 Lasker Awards for "outstanding accomplishments in basic medical and clinical medical research, and public service." Long recognized as one of the most prestigious scientific and medical awards in the United States, many Lasker Award recipients later receive a Nobel Prize for their contributions to the community.
This years recipients include Richard H. Scheller and Thomas C. Südhof for discoveries relating to molecular makeup of neurotransmitters; Graeme M. Clark, Ingeborg Hochmair and Blake S. Wilson for the development of a hearing device intended for individuals with profound deafness; and Bill and Melinda Gates for their roles in publicly addressing health concerns and for their efforts in improving vulnerable lives. The awards, which carry an honorarium of $250,000 for each category, will be presented on Friday, September 20 in New York City.
